Playstation 3 fix

Last week while I was watching a movie, my Playstation died. Flashing red light and no video. This was very upsetting as I watch all my streaming media through my Playstation. No Netflix, no Hulu, no Amazon. Normally I’d just go and buy a new one, but the Playstation 4 is coming out in a few months.

After a bit of research on the internet, I find that this is a pretty common occurrence with the original Playstation 3s. They solder the CPU and GPU directly to the motherboard and because of the cheap solder they use, the connection can fail after repeated fluctuations in temperature.

The fix is to take the PS3 apart and use a heat gun to basically melt the solder and let it make new connections. Or something like that.

It took me an hour and a half to do this, and I have a feeling this is just a temporary fix, but if it can last me until the Playstation 4 is out it’s worth it.

I didn’t think anyone wanted to watch 90 minutes of me swearing so I just made a 30 second timelapse.
